Pensacola Police say excessive speed may have been the cause of a crash that killed a 17-year-old boy.

Tyler McCoy was killed early Monday morning when the Mustang he was riding in crashed into another car on 17th Street near the CSX trestle.

Police say the driver, 20-year-old James Hatfield, went under the trestle around 4:45 a.m., lost control and slid sideways into oncoming traffic. The Mustang was hit in the rear passenger side by a Hyundai.

McCoy was taken to Baptist Hospital where he died a short time later.

The driver of the Hyundai, Vivian Knuth, was taken to Sacred Heart with multiple injuries. The other two passengers in the mustang, 17-year-old Samuel Sheltema and 16-year-old Dakota Smith, were also taken to Sacred Heart. Smith is in critical condition. Sheltema is listed in stable condition.

Hatfield was taken to Baptist Hospital with multiple injuries.

Charges have not been filed against Hatfield.

This was the second traffic death in Pensacola of 2009.
