WATERBERG, South Africa - A British reporter got more than he bargained for when he voluntarily walked into a lion's den.

Charles Starmer-Smith was supposed to be making tourism videos in South Africa.

"I've been told not to be scared," Starmer-Smith said. "The lions sense fear."

Starmer-Smith says he decided entering a cage to pet a year-old lion about to be returned to the wild would be the "opportunity of a lifetime."

The lion started biting Starmer-Smith's foot and my arm. The animal's handler reassured him the lion's behavior was only playful.

Starmer-Smith later said there was a moment when he told himself things had gotten out of control, before he slowly and cautiously made his exit.

Starmer-Smith escaped with a deeply scratched shoulder and an injured leg.
