Mobile firefighters are trying to figure out what caused a boat fire blamed for more than a million dollars in damage.
Mobile Fire-Rescue dispatchers got a call at 1:12 a.m. about boats on fire at the Scenic Basin Yacht Club. When firefighters arrived, two 45 foot boats and part of the boat slips were on fire. The mooring lines on one of the boats burned through, causing the boat to drift across the basin, scorching the bows of two other boats. Both of the burning boats sank in the basin.
Investigators believe the fire started on a boat named “Katie’s Dream.” The roof over at least six boat slips and part of the slip walkways also burned.
Mobile Fire-Rescue's Haz-Mat Team and the U.S. Coast Guard’s Strike Team were called to the scene to help clean up the diesel fuel and oil spilling from
the boats.
