There is a renewed interest among Alabama
lawmakers to crack down on online retailers who don't collect sales
tax.
The Mobile Press-Register reports that Alabama could lose more
than $100 million this year because of Internet transactions that
don't include proper taxing, based on a study from the University
of Tennessee. Alabama law requires companies with stores in the
state or who have contracts with the state to collect sales tax
from online purchases.
As more cuts loom for Alabama's budget, lawmakers like Rep. John
Knight, the Montgomery Democrat who chairs the House Government
Appropriations Committee, say every dollar is critical. Lawmakers
are looking at ways to change state laws to collect that missed
revenue.
