(AP) - Alabama Marine Police are getting two
new patrol boats for ports in Mobile and Guntersville with the help
of about $540,000 in federal security grants.
The grants were announced Tuesday by the Alabama Department of
Conservation and Natural Resources. The agency is partnering with
the state homeland security department to use the boats as part of
an overall protection strategy.
Alabama Homeland Security Director Jim Walker said the larger
patrol boats will allow marine police to provide increased security
and stay on water-related incidents longer.
The boats can operate under severe weather conditions, giving
marine police more flexibility in emergencies. The boats will be in
operation by the summer of 2010.
