Officials say Commonwealth National Bank
will be the title sponsor for this year's Gulf Coast Classic.
The Press-Register reports that bank board chairman Michael
Pierce said Friday the board decided on the sponsorship at a
special meeting Wednesday.
The Mobile County Commission is set to vote Tuesday on whether
it should give $50,000 to the Gulf Coast Classic Scholar and Sports
Foundation for this year's game.
The game is scheduled for Nov. 14 at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in
Mobile. It features two historically black schools, Alabama State
University in Montgomery and Southern University in Baton Rouge,
La.
The city council last month approved giving $47,500 for this
year's came. There was some controversy last year about the
$275,000 the city contributed to the game and whether the schools
got the amount they were supposed to.
