October Heatwave?

October Heatwave?

Near record temperatures causing problems at 38th Annual National Shrimp Festival in Gulf Shores

The Gulf Shores Fire Department has been busy responding to dozens of heat-related emergencies at the 38th Annual National Shrimp Festival.
On Thursday, crews treated more than 20 people suffering heat-related illnesses.

"An October heatwave is definitely something rare for the Gulf Coast, but not unheard of, we want to stress to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks," says Gulf Shores firefighter Brian McMahon. "A lot of our out of town vendors and guests aren't used to this heat."

Just about everyone at the festival carried a fan and a bottle of water to help beat the heat. Frozen lemonade stands set up throughout the festival grounds were very popular.

On Friday, temperatures reached the 90's along the beach with a heat index approaching 100 degrees. Firefighters have a first-aid station and tent located at the main entrance of the Shrimp Festival near the Hang-out.

A little relief could be on the way this weekend thanks to an approaching cold front.

The 38th Annual National Shrimp Festival runs through Sunday.
