More than 250 contract workers have
lost their jobs in the first round of layoffs related to the
planned shutdown of the space shuttle program by the end of 2010.
The Orlando Sentinel reports that 258 shuttle contractors lost
their jobs Saturday. The move comes a few days after 70 security
workers at Cape Canaveral Air Force station and a handful at
rocket-maker United Launch Alliance were laid off. Officials
estimate that 7,000 jobs will be lost in the space program by the
end of 2010.
There are six shuttle flights scheduled before the program is
slated to end. Tracy Yates, a spokeswoman for United Space
Alliance, which services the shuttle for NASA, said the remaining
missions will be harmed by the layoffs.
