News 5 has learned that the Senior Bowl will be staying in mobile.
The headlines in the morning paper read 'Bye Bye Senior Bowl?' The story indicated the all-star game was close to signing a deal to move to Jacksonville.
But today, lawyers and chairman of the boards for both Ladd Peebles Stadium and the Mobile Arts and Sports Association reached an agreement to play the 2010 game here and negotiations continue on a long-term contract.
I talked to Mayor Sam Jones from his hospital bed in Arkansas, where he's undergoing a final round of cancer treatments. Mayor Jones says the new deal will be good medicine for him and the City of Mobile.
"I am very very pleased," Jones said. ''There are a lot of people in this city who have been working very, very hard to try to make sure the Senior Bowl remains in Mobile just not for this year but in the future. And we'll continue to do that. So its a great announcement and we're ready to move forward with the game."
A formal announcement is expected next week.
