The holiday weekend got off to a deadly start in Wilmer. Alabama state troopers say 27-year old Jeremy Evans of Semmes died when his pickup collided with a tractor trailer. It happened around five Friday morning near the intersection of Highway 98 and Glenwood Road. The driver of the 18-wheeler was not hurt.
The accident happened on a stretch of road that's been under fire in the past year because of the stalled Highway 98 Bypass Project. People living near the intersection say a steep hill in both directions prevents some drivers from seeing the stoplight in time. Between 1995 and 2008, 50 people died on the stretch of Highway 98 from the Alabama-Mississippi state line to the Mobile city limits. Neighbors say they take extra precautions near Glenwood Road.
“Whenever we pull up there, we always stop, even though the light's green we stop and look both ways because people fly and they'll run the red light,” says Glenwood Road resident Brad Davis.
People living along Glenwood Road say more needs to be done to alert drivers to that stop light along Highway 98. They say more signs or extra lights should be added to get driver's attention.
