There were scary moments at a busy Mobile intersection Monday afternoon as a motorcycle officer was hurt in a traffic accident.
The accident happened about 5:30 at the corner of Highway 90 and Rangeline Road in Tillman's Corner.
Mobile Police identified the officer as Otha Lee Hargrove.
They said he was undergoing surgery Monday night in the emergency room of USA Medical Center.
Al McMullen of Mobile said he was driving his car eastbound on Highway 90 when he struck a Mobile Police officer on a motorcycle.
Corporal Charles Bagsby with the Mobile Police Department said, "Five year veteran officer Otha Lee Hargrove was struck while he was on a motorcycle at that intersection."
But McMullen said the officer turned in front of him as the policeman was making a turn south onto Rangeline Road.
He said, "I had stopped for the red light, and I was sitting there waiting for my light, and my light turned green, and I started proceeding across, and his light had already turned red. He (the officer) was in the turn lane, and he shot across in front of me. I did not see any blue lights and he did not have a siren on."
I told Corporal Charles Bagsby what McMullen said.
When asked if he knew anything about that, Bagsby said, "Right now, the details of the investigation are not being released. This is an ongoing investigation, and we're not releasing any information regarding that right now until the investigation is complete."
McMullen said he had a chance to see what happened to the officer.
McMullen said the officer "was complaining about his back hurting, and they cut his boot off. It looked like he had a gash in his leg."
Bagsby said, "Right now, his (Hargrove's) condition is stable. He has a broken foot."
Police diverted traffic from the corner of Highway 90 and Rangeline as they worked to clear the accident.
McMullen said, "I hate to see anybody injured, and I hate that it happened."
Hargrove is a member of the police traffic unit.
