Several Mobile marines are saying happy birthday to the corps. The Mobile chapter of the Monford Point Marine Association celebrated the 234th anniversary of the US Marines tonight at the Admiral Semmes Hotel, 11/14/09. The ball is an annual event for the military group. The Monford Point Marines dates back to the segregated era of the World War II military. It commemorates the first African American marines. Organizers say they stand firm behind America’s fighting men and women.

“We trust that all Mobilians begin to realize what the afghan war is all about and the operation freedom what it's all about and we are here to support the marines and servicemen,” says ball chairman Willie Shipman. Two of the original Monford Point Marines were also in attendance. The US Marine Corps turned 234 this past Tuesday.
