Baldwin County Toll Road?

Baldwin County Toll Road?

Local and state transportation officials want to build a toll road connecting Interstate 65 with I-10 in North Baldwin County

Joe Perkins and Lee Cain live near one of three proposed toll road routes.

"It'd be coming right in front of my house the way I understand it and that would be more traffic problems," says Cain.

"I'm not happy with it at all," says Perkins. "I have 101 acres right down the road, it's proposed coming right through the middle of it."

The men say the highway would destroy wetlands and delicate wildlife.

"I've got several places on my land where there's gopher turtles, they're protected by federal law," says Perkins.

Local and state transportation officials want to build a highway connecting Interstate 65 with I-10. The north-south highway would give Baldwin County another hurricane evacuation route. But with state and local governments watching every dollar they spend, how will the road be funded?

"The county has requested funds from Congress and if that does not work, we're investigating several options and one of the options would be a toll road," says Cal Markert with the Baldwin County Highway Dept.

The 20 to 30 mile toll connector could cost nearly 300 million dollars to build.
