Ronnie Cottrell tells News 5 Sports he was "released" this morning as Bryant High school football Coach and Athletic Director.
Cottrell said he, "didn't see the change coming and was extremely surprised the school was going in another direction." A call to Bryant Principal Doug Estelle hasn't been returned this afternoon.
This was Cottrell's second season as Bryant's head coach. The Hurricanes finished the 2009 season with a 3-7 record.
Cottrell said he enjoyed his 17 months at the south Mobile county school, calling it, "a great place to live and tough place to coach." He said he hopes to find another coaching job in the Mobile area.
Sixteen of the 18 seniors on last year's team signed college football scholarships.
Cottrell is a former assistant coach at Alabama. He said this was the first time he'd ever been fired as a head coach. He was let go as an assistant when Mike Dubose was fired at Alabama.
