A pioneer of Mobile's Fire-Rescue department has died.

Herbert "Herbie" Horton, 74, began working for the department in 1968, and he was among the first ten firefighters trained and certified to be a paramedic. Horton was the first African-American to join the department's Emergency Medical Services Program.

Herbie, as his friends called him, worked 27 years before he retired in 1995.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
