Nine Local Kids Win National Merit Scholarships

Fifty-four Alabama public school students have won college-sponsored National Merit Scholarships.

The requirements for National Merit Scholarships include:
Outstanding academic record
Endorsement and recommendation by a school official
Earned SAT scores that confirmed the qualifying test performance
Essay describing activities, interests, and goals

Eight of the 54 winners are from public schools in Mobile and Baldwin County.

students, and 2,100 in professional schools. All divisions are coeducational except Newcomb College for Women and the College of Arts
and Sciences for Men.

with leading engineering schools, and has a notable record of entrance of graduates into graduate school. The university is a member of the

The University of Tulsa consists of five undergraduate colleges, a college of law and a graduate school. A full-time undergraduate and
graduate enrollment of some 5,000 students from all the states and 40 foreign countries are taught by a faculty of more than 350, with over
70 percent of the full-time faculty members holding earned doctorates. Six baccalaureate degrees are offered and graduate and professional
degrees are offered in over 10 areas.
