Saluda Hill Cemetery in Spanish Fort is rich in military history. Now, this sacred piece of land will become even more special. Alabama Governor Bob Riley signed a law Friday establishing Saluda Hill as the state's first veterans cemetery.
"A mere thank is never going to be enough," says Riley. "But now we have something in this area for the people who wanted to be buried in a cemetery with other people who have served."
The new cemetery will be special for Vietnam veteran Bill Callender and World War Two veteran Glenn Frazier.
"We now can in turn our heroes and our veterans in Alabama and not have to go to Florida or Mississippi to be buried. It's a great day!" says Callender.
"This is wonderful for our families, families that we leave and they can come close to home and come to the grave site and be here," says Frazier.
The 103 acre site will serve more than 70-thousand veterans in Southwest Alabama. The state secured a seven-point-six-million dollar grant to build the cemetery.
