BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - An attorney for five Alabama police
officers says they were following their training when they were
caught on videotape beating an unconscious suspect.
Attorney Gayle Gear said Thursday the Birmingham officers did
not know the suspect, Anthony Warren, had been ejected from his car
and was unconscious at the end of a police chase.
The officers have been fired but Gear says they're appealing.
Attorney Wendy Crew says she expects to file a lawsuit on
Warren's behalf this week. Crew says the suit will seek monetary
damages and changes in the way the city trains police officers.
The incident happened more than a year ago but the tape only
surfaced recently when a prosecutor preparing for Warren's trial
asked for the original. Her copy did not include the beating.
