MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama has a new law allowing stronger
beer to be sold in the state.
A spokesman for Gov. Bob Riley says he signed legislation Friday
that immediately raises the alcohol limit on beer from 6 percent to
13.9 percent by volume. The Legislature approved the higher limit
last week.
Alabama had the nation's lowest alcohol limit on beer, and the
new law allows specialty and imported beers to be purchased in the
state.
Riley's signature on the beer bill came one week after he signed
legislation allowing the sale of stronger table wine in Alabama.
The beer bill was pushed by a grassroots group called Free the
Hops. Its president, Stuart Carter of Birmingham, says he's
shellshocked that four years of work to raise the limit has finally
paid off.
