When the water warms, the fish begin to gather.

Beach goers in Pensacola Beach are starting to see manta rays. The sleek, stealthy fish starts making its appearance at the beginning of summer, when water warms up. They general swim in small schools. We were able to spot a few from atop the fishing pier in Pensacola Beach. Even though they look a little imposing in the water, lifeguards say you have nothing to worry about.

“They’re kind of like jets flying through the water, we call them the underwater blue angels, but they pose no harm to anybody,” says Senior Life Guard Council Vaughan. Lifeguards say, sometimes when the manta rays get into shallow waters, their fins are mistaken for sharks. Again, officials say the manta rays are harmless.
