Fewer Rabies Shots For Pets

Pet owners will only have to get their animals vaccinated for rabies once every three years rather than every year under a bill that has received final approval in the Alabama Legislature.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Pet owners will only have to get their
animals vaccinated for rabies once every three years rather than
every year under a bill that has received final approval in the
Alabama Legislature.
The bill passed the Alabama House Thursday on a 101-0 vote and
now goes to the governor for review.
The bill's sponsor, Sen. Larry Dixon of Montgomery, said rabies
vaccines are now good for three years, but state law requires the
shots be given every year. He said it's bad for the animals to give
them the shots every year.
The current law requires that cats and dogs receive the
vaccinations. The bill passed by the Legislature Thursday would
require that ferrets also receive the rabies shots.
