MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - Mobile officials have a unique photo
opportunity for port city supporters of Barton Academy, a landmark
building and former school system headquarters. It's now vacant.
As a part of National Preservation Month, officials plan a photo
at 12:30 p.m. Thursday of residents gathered on the balconies at
the building on Government Street. The photo will be used to
promote preservation efforts around the country.
Built in 1835 as Alabama's first public school, Barton is one of
Mobile's most significant historic sites and has been placed on the
Alabama Historic Commission's Places in Peril list.
