Streets Turn Into Rivers

Some Santa Rosa county residents needed a kayak to get around in some neighborhoods after county officials say more than 13 inches of rain fell in the central part of the county.

According to officials, most low lying areas of the county are flooded and are expected to remain that way throughout Saturday into Sunday. Lisa Mayo lives on Gordan Land road in the Berrydale community near the Blackwater River State Forest. She says she has not seen this much rain in the 15-years that she's lived there. She even took pictures of her son Dusty kayaking down their road! According to the Mobile Weather Service, the river has not seen flooding of this magnitude since 1975 when it reached 19.45 feet. The river is expected to crest Sunday morning near 20 feet.

Residents, especially in the northern end of the county are being asked to stay off the roads until they have been cleared by inspectors. Several people had to be rescued due to the rising waters, even some campers at Tomahawk Landing. Fortunately, officials say that no one was hurt during the overnight storm.
