Flooding Forces Evacuations In Washington County

Emergency officials in Washington County, Alabama evacuated some families from homes near the Mobile County line Friday.
High water from a bayou has threatened houses.
Other families took precautions in hopes of keeping their homes from flooding.
Water from Poll Bayou was crossing Washington County Road 4 and coming close to getting in homes.
Washington County Sheriff Richard Stringer said, "The low-lying areas are flooded. We've evacuated quite a few folks. Maybe ten, twelve residents have been evacuated."
A couple of miles away, along U.S. Highway 43, about two dozen people helped Billie Jean Sullivan and her family fill sandbags and pump water away from their home.
Sullivan said, "It's like a nightmare coming true."
Russell Sullivan said, "We've been here eleven years. Water has never been this high."
Passing motorists even stopped to work.
Douglas Estle stopped to volunteer.
He said, "I don't know who I'm helping, but I'm here."
Washington County authorities will be watching weather forecasts throughout the night.
County Commissioner Kesler Weaver, Senior said, "We may have to (make) this road (County Road 4) a little bit more secure than what it is at this time."
Sheriff Stringer said, "If we get another four to six inches of rain tonight, we've really got some problems."
