MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Troy University Chancellor Jack Hawkins
says he has decided not to run for governor in 2010.
Hawkins said Wednesday in Montgomery that he had received lots
of encouragement to run for governor as a Republican. But he
decided he was more passionate about Troy than pursuing public
office.
Greenville businessman Tim James is so far the only declared
Republican candidate to succeed Republican Gov. Bob Riley.
Other Republicans eyeing the race but haven't declared include
state two-year college Chancellor Bradley Byrne, former Alabama
Chief Justice Roy Moore, state Rep. Robert Bentley, Birmingham
lawyer Luther Strange, state House Minority Leader Mike Hubbard and
State Treasurer Kay Ivey.
