MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A committee in the Alabama House has
approved a bill to allow family members of military troops killed
in the line of duty to buy special car tags.
The House Public Safety Committee approved on a unanimous vote
Wednesday the sale of the special tags for Gold Star Families.
That's a designation used for decades to refer to the families of
service members killed in the line of duty.
The sponsor of the bill, Republican Rep. Paul DeMarco of
Homewood, unveiled the tag at a Statehouse ceremony Wednesday.
Donna Smith of Eva, whose son, Marine Lance Cpl. Jonathan Smith,
died in Iraq in 2005, said the purpose of the tags is to remind
people that "someone lost their life for freedom."
