VANCE, Ala. (AP) - Mercedes-Benz has been approved for more than $11 million in tax breaks to expand its body shop and buy new
equipment at its Tuscaloosa County plant.
The Tuscaloosa County Industrial Development Authority last week approved the automaker's request for $11.5 million in tax
abatements, plus a $150,000 grant for site preparation. The project calls for a 200,000-square-foot expansion of its body shop, where
vehicle panels and other external features take shape.
It's not expected to create new jobs, however. Mercedes officials say the project positions the Vance plant for future
work. The plant has been reducing its work force amid the auto industry slump.
