OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - What began as a routine traffic stop has
ended in the deaths of three police officers and a suspect.
Police in Oakland, Calif., say a man wanted for violating his
parole opened fire after being pulled over. Two officers were shot,
one fatally. The other officer is reported in grave condition.
Police say the suspect then fled the scene on foot into a nearby
neighborhood, leading to an intense manhunt. Officers found the
suspect barricaded inside an apartment building.
Police say the suspect, 26-year-old Lovelle Mixon of Oakland,
fired an assault rifle at officers who came into the building to
arrest him. Two SWAT team members were killed and a third was
grazed by a bullet. Police returned fire, killing Mixon.
California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has issued a statement
calling it a tragic day.
