MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - A well-known outdoorsman who gained notice
as a fugitive in a state case has been found guilty in federal
court in Mobile of illegally possessing ammunition.
The jury took just over an hour to convict Edmond H. "Eddie"
Smith IV on Tuesday. His attorney says he will appeal.
Smith faces a maximum of 10 years in prison when he is sentenced
on June 17.
Sheriff's deputies found 780 rounds of ammunition in the south
Mobile County mansion where Smith was living.
Smith pleaded guilty in February 2008 to a state weapons
violation and was sentenced to six months in jail. It was one of
several legal problems faced by Smith, including his flight to
Costa Rica while serving a 90-day term for harassment. That escape
charge was dropped.
