Challenges Expected In 2010 Census

Economy could play a major role in the success of next year's U.S. Census.

UNDATED (AP) - The census isn't until next year, but minority advocacy groups are launching an outreach campaign now.

They're hoping to educate people about the 2010 census, especially immigrants who may not know what a census is. Immigrants
may also come from countries where such information is used against people.

Activists and government officials are also concerned that fears about immigration enforcement and government snooping can make
people more reluctant to share their information.

The economy is also playing a role. Millions of laid-off renters and foreclosed homeowners are on the move -- and may be hard to
track.

For the first time, bilingual forms are being sent to millions of homes. The government is also looking for census-takers who
speak languages other than English.

The official kickoff date is April 1, 2010.
