MAYPORT, Fla. (AP) - A Navy sailor has been acquitted of charges
he abused a detainee while on guard duty in Iraq during his
court-martial at Mayport Naval Station.
Petty Officer 2nd Class Jonathan Armstrong of Norfolk, Va. was
found not guilty Thursday of assault and battery, conspiracy and
making false statements by a seven-member jury.
The charges stemmed from an incident last year at Camp Bucca
when a detainee was beaten after spitting on guards.
Armstrong said he was only following orders given by Chief Petty
Officer Tracy Necaise, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy and assault
last month and was sentenced to 89 days in the brig, $1,500
forfeiture and a one grade reduction in pay.
