Day Care Subsidy Cut Postponed

Alabama DHR puts off cuts in the subsidized daycare program for 1 month

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The state Department of Human Resources
is postponing cuts for one month in its subsidized day-care program
for low-income working families.
The department had been planning to cut about 3,000 children
from the program on April 1, but the department announced Friday it
was delaying that until May 1. Department officials say a federal
appropriation approved by Congress on Tuesday is allowing the
postponement.
The department has been grappling with program cuts due to
declining state funding. The subsidized program helps pay the
day-care costs for working parents who are below 150 percent of the
federal poverty level. The department had been planning to cut that
to 120 percent on April 1.
