She's just a "precious, precious little girl caught in the crossfire of something terrible." That's how grandfather Charles Myers describes his youngest grandchild hospitalized after yesterday's shooting rampage in south Alabama.
The smallest victim, three month old Ella Kay Myers was with her mom and sister on the front porch of a neighbors home when bullets came from seemingly nowhere. "We're very, very lucky," says Myers. "Because she was hit with multiple pieces of shrapnel."
The little girl underwent surgery Wednesday afternoon at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola. Pediatric surgeon Dr. Stephen Kimmel says the operation was successful. "Ella had a good size fragment in her groin. We were also able to take out a blood clot and fix an injury to a small vein." Doctors believe she could go home as soon as Thursday. That is a relief for a grandfather who is still struggling to make sense of it all, "There is no script for this," says Myers, "We are still in shock. It is extremely difficult to process this."
