MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The financial problems in Alabama's
prepaid college tuition plan are drawing notice at the Legislature and in Congress.
Democratic U.S. Rep. Artur Davis of Birmingham said Wednesday
the Legislature should authorize a special audit to establish the
program's fiscal condition.
Republican state Rep. Robert Bentley of Tuscaloosa said
Wednesday the Legislature must look for solutions. Bentley was
joined at a news conference by the chairman of the Christian
Coalition of Alabama, Randy Brinson, and the chairman of the
Alabama Democratic Party, Joe Turnham. Both have had children in
the program.
The three men said parents thought they were buying into a
guaranteed tuition program, even though state law doesn't provide
that.
