WINNENDEN, Germany (AP) - Germany's chancellor calls today's
school shootings "a horrific crime. Members of the European
Parliament observed a moment of silence. And the local police chief
says he's never seen anything like it in his life.
A 17-year-old boy armed with a large-caliber pistol shot and
killed 15 people before taking his own life in a shootout with
German police.
It happened when the teen went back to the high school where he
graduated last year and opened fire, killing nine students and
three teachers. All but one of the victims were female: eight of
the students and all three of the teachers.
Then the shooter killed a man outside the school before
hijacking a car and speeding off. When the driver swerved off the
road at a police checkpoint, the gunman fled on foot, running into
a car dealership where he killed a salesman and a customer before
opening fire on police who had sped to the scene. The Stuttgart
prosecutor's office says the teen shot himself during the
gunbattle.
They don't know a motive but say he apparently used one of his
father's guns.
