Contact lenses are a popular option for millions, but not everyone should wear the kind you sleep in. New research in Alabama may make it possible to figure out who's the best candidate for these long-term lenses.
Research at the University of Alabama at Birmingham focuses on cytokines, which are inflammatory markers that indicate an allergic reaction.
"Whether it's to allergens or, or debris that's trapped on the lens, they're having some kind of allergic response to it," said UAB Doctoral Candidate Lucy Kehinde.
researchers hopes to find markers that will tell eye doctors just who should wear long-term lenses.
"If we notice that certain cytokines that we know are present in disease states increase early in a 30 day period, then we can tell that that individual is not a good candidate for extended wear," said Kehinde.
