Free prostate cancer screenings being offered

On Saturday, March 14, the Mobile County Health Department’s Primary Care Clinic and the University of South Alabama’s Mitchell Cancer Institute will team up to provide free prostate cancer screenings.

The screenings will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Dearborn YMCA, located at 321 N. Warren St., as part of a community health fair being sponsored by the Junior League of Mobile.

According to Dr. Bert Eichold, Health Officer, prostate cancer is the No. 2 cause of cancer death in men but is one of the most treatable if caught in the early stages.

“In fact, the 10-year survival rate for prostate cancer is 93 percent if it is detected and treated early,” he says.

Eichold also says that African-American men have a 70 percent higher rate of prostate cancer than do Caucasian men and die from prostate cancer more often than other men.
