MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - Biologists say this year's crop of Mobile
Bay shrimp are too small for most of the bay to be opened for
shrimping at this point.
The season usually starts in early June, but will probably not
begin until July.
While a small portion of south Mobile Bay is open, most of it
remains closed, along with the majority of Alabama's portion of the
Mississippi Sound.
It also appears there are fewer shrimp this year. Frakie
Allbritten of the state Marine Resources Division thinks fresh
water that came down the rivers in April may have been a factor
because if salinity drops too quickly, it can kill the larvae.
