Homeless Men Hired To Commit Check Fraud

A Robertsdale business is one of many that federal authorities say was swindled out of thousands of dollars by two men in South Carolina.

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - Federal authorities say two men in South
Carolina recruited homeless men to cash thousands of dollars in
checks stolen from Alabama and Mississippi companies.
A federal judge ruled Friday that the case against cousins
31-year-old Born King and 27-year-old Fahiym Hussain Pearson be
turned over to a grand jury.
Others charged in the case are 32-year-old Robert Leo Kelly and
John Edward Frost. A fifth defendant, Stephen Lewis Raney, has not
yet been caught by authorities.
Authorities say King and Pearson would recruit from homeless
shelters, buy the recruits new clothing and send them to banks to
cash checks altered with a typewriter.
The companies include Treasure Bay Hotel & Casino in Gulfport,
Miss., and All South Vinyl and Siding in Robertsdale, Ala.
