MAWSS Promises Prichard Residents Cheaper Rates

Mobile Area Water & Sewer System says Prichard residents will pay less for water if the Prichard Water Works and Sewer Board will turn over control of the city's sewer system.

MAWSS has submitted a proposal to the Prichard Water Board for managing the city's sewer system. In it, MAWSS says it can immediately save Prichard residents $80 a year by operating the system more efficiently and taking advantage of the combined size and staffs of the two systems. MAWSS also says residents could save more if it is allowed to take over the operation of Prichard’s two wastewater treatment plants, currently run by private contractor, Severn Trent Services (STS), at a cost of close to a million dollars a year.

MAWSS was approached in April by State Senator Vivian Figures and the Concerned Citizens of Prichard who are looking for relief from high water bills.

Prichard is currently negotiating with STS to operate their system.

MAWSS hopes to meet with Prichard officials in the next few weeks to go over it's proposal.
