MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Bill Johnson has resigned as director of
the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs to pursue
a Republican campaign for governor.
Johnson was appointed to the Cabinet post by Gov. Bob Riley.
Johnson said the governor had given him until Friday to make up his
mind about the governor's race, and he decided to jump in. Johnson
says he will hold a formal campaign kickoff in a few weeks.
Johnson joins State Treasurer Kay Ivey, former Chief Justice Roy
Moore, state Rep. Robert Bentley, former two-year college
Chancellor Bradley Byrne, and Greenville businessman Tim James in
the GOP primary.
