An officer who was hurt while on his last shift with the Bayou La Batre Police Department is out of the hospital. 21-year-old Timothy Byrd of Semmes was hospitalized for three days after he was exposed to an ammonia leak. It happened Sunday morning at a seafood shop on Tram Avenue. His mom says her son is doing much better, "when he talked to me you could smell ammonia and I actually thought that they had been cleaning the hospital with it and he kind of laughed, you know, just to try to make me feel better and he said that's me that you smell," said Officer Byrd's mother, Tanya Byrd. She says her son will continue being a police officer, he's just trying to get closer to home.
