BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - The mother of a 43-year-old man who died
after being zapped by police with a stun gun has filed a wrongful
death lawsuit in Jefferson County Circuit Court.
Corene Dixon claims that officers wrongfully jolted Willie Maye
multiple times with a Taser, sprayed him with Mace and beat him on
June 5, 2008, while he was not breaking any laws. The suit filed
Wednesday seeks compensatory and punitive damages.
Dixon named as defendants seven police officers, three fire and
rescue employees, the city and Police Chief A.C. Roper. A city
spokeswoman declined to comment because they had not been served
with the lawsuit.
Police have said Maye fought with officers after he left the
vehicle he was in and ran from them while police were conducting
checkpoints.
