“Air conditioner work is probably about the 3rd or 4th most expensive thing you can do on a vehicle,” says Hendry. Even with the extra work, Hendry says they do see people coming in who *think* their AC is running hot--when it's just fine.
“It's hard for any ac unit whether it's a home unit or a car unit to be very efficient,” says Hendry.
He says most air conditioners will only cool a car 25 degrees from the ambient temperature outside. He recommends using the "Max AC" setting to re-circulate cabin air.
“Where the hot air from outside isn't going over the evaporator core it's easier to cool off cold air than it is to cool off hot air,” says Hendry. He says cracking windows with rain guards helps vent the hot air too. On home and business units, technicians like Kenny Frye have been making house calls since march. Their business has doubled in recent days.
“Start turning them on and then you start finding problems either they don't run right with electrical problems or you have refrigerant problems,” says Frye. He says the hot weather makes for longer work days, but they'd rather be busy than not.
