Mississippi's hockey team has a new name and it's raising a few eyebrows.
The Southern Professional Hockey League had a name contest and the winner is... Mississippi Surge.
Some people who live along the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast feel the name is a little insensitive but the coach in Biloxi says the name isn't about storm surge.
Coach and General Manager Steffon Walby says the name represents a high voltage hockey team with a surge of electricity. "We are talking about in the electrical power surge sense of the word. We wanted to take all offensive parts of out the name the surge because we knew what it did to the area. To be honest with you, the most requested name was Hurricanes! We didn't want to do that one not only because the Carolina Hurricanes are a hockey team but we didn't feel that represented the coast."
Some of the other names tossed out of the contest were Storm Surge, Camille's and Kats.
The Mississippi Surge starts its season in October. If you want more info about the new team, here's their website. Mississippi Surge Website
