SHALIMAR, Fla. (AP) - A Florida Panhandle sheriff indicted for
corruption has officially resigned.
Okaloosa County Sheriff Charlie Morris tendered his resignation,
effective May 19, to Gov. Charlie Crist in a one-sentence letter
dated May 26.
Crist spokesman Sterling Ivey said the governor's office would
honor the resignation date requested by Morris. Ivey said the
letter didn't make it into the Governor's Appointment Office for
public dissemination until Thursday.
Morris had been sheriff for 12 years when federal agents
arrested him Feb. 27. He pleaded guilty last month and faces
decades in prison when sentenced July 28.
Crist suspended Morris when he was arrested and appointed Ed
Spooner as interim sheriff. Spooner will serve until an election in
2010.
