The man charged with murder for the shooting death of a Mobile police officer says he's sorry.

According to police, 18-year-old Richard Hollingsworth shot Officer Brandon Sigler Tuesday night in the parking lot of the Tyler Ridge Apartments on Thomas Road in West Mobile.

Hollingsworth says he showed up at the complex to protect his girlfriend.

"My girlfriend had been beaten by a couple of other girls out at that apartment complex earlier that evening," Hollingsworth said."Guy told us to leave with a gun on his hip. I got really scared. I pulled out a pistol and I shot him."

Hollingsworth says he didn't know Sigler was a police officer because he wasn't wearing a badge. "I'm so sorry. I'll never be able to say it enough."

Mobile police are transporting Hollingsworth to the Baldwin County Jail in Bay Minette because Sigler's mother works at Mobile Metro Jail.

Hollingsworth had one thing to say as he was put into the back of a police car. "Ya'll pray for me."
