Officer Brandon Sigler worked as a Mobile Police Officer but was also a courtesy officer at Tyler Ridge Apartments in West Mobile. The courtesy officer agreement allows an officer to live at a complex for reduced rent if they provide security.
On Tuesday night, Mobile Police say Officer Sigler was trying to break up a fight between a few girls in the parking lot of the complex. Officer Sigler reportedly broke up that fight but there was more trouble ahead.
A short time later, the boyfriend of one of the girls showed up. 18-year old Richard Hollingsworth admits he had a weapon but was only going over to the apartments to protect his girlfriend. It didn't take long for Hollingsworth and Officer Sigler to find each other.
Hollingsworth says he had no idea that Sigler was a cop and just panicked when he saw the gun on Sigler's hip. Then, he fired that one deadly shot.
Richard Hollingsworth talked to our cameras as he left for jail. "I showed up to save my girlfriend, guy told us to leave with a pistol on his hip. I got really scared, pulled a pistol. What do you wanna say to his family? He's dead I'm so sorry. I'll never to be able to say it enough. Y'all pray for me"
Hollingsworth has been charged with capital murder, a drug charge and possession of an altered firearm. Police say the pistol he used to kill Sigler was stolen from a sheriff's deputy last year. Hollingsworth is at the Baldwin County jail because Sigler's mother works at Mobile Metro.
