The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration awarded $525,539 to the University of South Alabama's Center for Hurricane Intensity and Landfall Research.

The money will be used to improve hurricane landfall prediction and local severe weather forecasts.

“With the start of the 2009 hurricane season, we are reminded that the Gulf Coast is particularly vulnerable to the destruction caused by hurricanes and severe tropical weather,” said Senator Richard Shelby who was instrumental in securing this funding. “The research conducted at the USA Center for Hurricane Intensity and Landfall Research will provide coastal communities a better picture of what to expect from tropical events so that they can be better prepared for these natural hazards.”
