A new school catches fire in Wilmer and the blaze may have been set on purpose. The fire started at Wilmer Elementary around 6pm Sunday, May 31, 2009. Crews spent almost three hours trying to put it out. Mobile County School Facilities Manager Tommy Sheffield says it appears someone set fire to several mops and threw them on the school roof. Damage was contained to the cafeteria. Fortunately, no one was hurt.
“It's a brand new school you know it's depressing just thank god school's out for the summer we have the opportunity to get it back and rebuild it before school opens,” says Sheffield. He says the fire caused several hundred thousand dollars worth of damage. Volunteer firefighters from Wilmer, Tanner Willaims, Semmes and Georgetown helped put it out.
